For many people, working from home has become increasingly appealing. This shift may be due to children now being in school, the need for supplemental income amid rising inflation, or the pursuit of a lifelong dream. Whatever the reason, the freedom and control of working from home are undeniable.

My journey of starting a business at 56

For over 30 years, I supported my husband’s military career and wanted to do something for myself when he retired. However, after leaving the military, I realized we likely wouldn’t live near a base where I’d done most of my ministry work.

I served as a mentor mom, or “Titus 2,” for the military women’s group at the local and regional levels after previously serving as European president of the group. When we retired, I envisioned becoming an online Titus 2 Woman. Even though I was in my 50s, I took the initiative. I started Practical Christian Woman to offer biblical coaching and online courses via phone, video conferences, and social media.

Why women are choosing to be mompreneurs

Here are some compelling reasons women have shared about their motivations to work from home and embrace the Mompreneur lifestyle:

  • They faced significant debt and received encouragement from their husbands to contribute financially to help pay it off.
  • They aimed to fund their children’s education at a Christian college or private school while maintaining a close presence in their lives.
  • They found themselves as the primary breadwinner for their family and preferred to avoid lengthy commutes or crowded environments.
  • They had a passion for their field, having studied it academically or worked in it before motherhood, or desired some extra spending money.
  • They had ample free time and a genuine desire to help others.
