I’m not particularly eager to do housework. The minute I get it done and move on to almost anything else, some part of the housework needs cleaning again.
Then whoever says, “Thank you for making the house clean and pretty?” My wonderful husband says it occasionally, but who else notices? Our friends and family comment if we don’t clean, not when it sparkles.
Do We Have to Do It?
Do we have to do housework? Everyone lives somewhere; a room, a house, an apartment, or a tent. All of us make messes.
Floors need cleaning, or we’ll trip over stuff or get a sliver in our foot. If we let dishes sit in the sink until the food dries hard, the dreaded bugs may invade our homes. Or we could use all paper plates or eat out every meal.
We want to wear clean clothes and not drive off our neighbors or coworkers because we stink. Then again, we could try what one of our sons did. He turned his shirts inside out and ran them through the dryer with a dryer sheet. Not what I recommend, but it worked for him.
Is It in the Bible?
A few basic household chores are necessary to live in today’s society. But is housework in the Bible? I like to do what the Bible talks about and follow biblical principles in my everyday life.
Guess we can’t get out of housework. Titus 2: 3-5 instructs the older women to teach the younger women to care for their homes.
Managing our homes well doesn’t mean we can’t have another job. But whether we have another occupation, we still need to care for our homes or share the load with others to meet the needs of our families.
Proverbs 31:27 says the model wife “watches over her household.” I like this concept because it sounds like a home manager and not the doer of it all.
Let’s tackle the monster called “Housework” and tame this dragon.
